The Union Government has officially approved the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ initiative as a Central Sector Scheme to promote the use of advanced drone technology in agriculture while empowering women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs). With an outlay of Rs. 1261 crore allocated for the period from 2023–24 to 2025–26, the scheme aims to improve agricultural efficiency and offer sustainable livelihood opportunities to women across rural India.
Objectives of the Scheme
The major goals of the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme include:
- Encouraging the adoption of drone technology in agriculture to increase crop yield and reduce operational costs.
- Transforming SHGs into drone service providers, thereby enhancing their income sources.
- Promoting modern agricultural practices in rural areas through women empowerment.
Progress So Far
According to data presented in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Mr. Ramnath Thakur, Lead Fertilizer Companies (LFCs) distributed 1094 drones to SHG members during 2023–24 using their own resources. Of these, 500 drones were distributed under the formal ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme.
The drones are being utilized for spraying Nano Fertilizers, which contribute to eco-friendly and cost-effective crop nourishment. The Agricultural Development and Rural Transformation Centre (ADRTC), Bengaluru, conducted a study that confirmed the positive economic impact and business viability of drone operations by SHGs. It noted a marked diversification of SHG activities, leading to enhanced efficiency, increased productivity, and improved incomes for women in rural areas.
State-Wise Deployment of Drones
States where SHGs are using drones for spraying nano fertilizers include:
- Karnataka – 147 drones
- Uttar Pradesh – 135 drones
- Andhra Pradesh – 106 drones
- Haryana – 102 drones
- Madhya Pradesh – 87 drones
- Telangana – 81 drones
- Maharashtra – 60 drones
- Gujarat – 58 drones
- Punjab – 57 drones
- Kerala – 51 drones
- Others – spread across 22 states, including smaller numbers in Goa, J&K, and Uttarakhand
The total number of Drone Didis across the country currently stands at 1094.
This scheme not only contributes to agricultural modernization but also plays a key role in empowering rural women, thereby aligning with the larger goals of self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and inclusive growth.
