New Delhi: In a significant move toward strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure, NHPC Limited signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Government of Chhattisgarh and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) for the development of two major Pumped Storage Projects — Hasdeo Bango (800 MW) and Kurund (1000 MW).
The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Mr. Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical), NHPC. The MoUs were signed by Mr. Rajat Gupta, Executive Director (SBD & C), NHPC; Mr. Rohit Yadav, Secretary (Energy), Government of Chhattisgarh; and Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Katiyar, Managing Director, CSPGCL.

Boost to India’s Energy Security and Green Transition
The projects mark a vital step in achieving India’s target of 19 GW pumped storage capacity by 2030, providing a reliable energy storage solution to support the integration of intermittent renewable sources such as solar and wind.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rohit Yadav, Secretary (Energy), Government of Chhattisgarh, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, calling it a “key step toward Chhattisgarh’s energy security and national energy goals.”

Reaffirming NHPC’s commitment, Mr. Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical), said, “These pumped storage projects are crucial for grid stability and long-term sustainable energy storage. NHPC is proud to partner with the Chhattisgarh government in advancing clean and reliable power infrastructure.”
The Hasdeo Bango and Kurund projects are expected to play a transformative role in both regional and national energy resilience, enabling better load balancing, peak power management, and decarbonization of the grid.
