New Delhi: State-owned power major NHPC Limited will commence commercial operations of Unit 3 (250 MW) of its 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project from Sunday, February 1, 2026, according to an exchange filing.
The project, being developed at an estimated cost of around ₹27,000 crore, is located near North Lakhimpur, on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
Commercial Operation to Start from February 1
In its regulatory filing on Friday, NHPC said:
“NHPC declares commercial operation (CoD) of Unit 3 (250 MW) of Subansiri Lower HE Project, 2000 MW (8 x 250 MW), Assam/Arunachal Pradesh from 00:00 hours on 01.02.2026.”
With the commissioning of this unit, the project moves a step closer to full-scale operation.

About the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project consists of eight units of 250 MW each, taking the total installed capacity to 2,000 MW. It is the largest hydroelectric project ever undertaken in India.
The project is a run-of-river scheme with water storage on the Subansiri River and is expected to significantly enhance power supply in the North-Eastern region while supporting grid stability and clean energy generation.

Once fully operational, the project will play a crucial role in strengthening India’s renewable energy capacity and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
