New Delhi: In a groundbreaking step towards strengthening India’s position as a global leader in emerging technologies, the NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub on Thursday launched a national roadmap to position the country as a leading quantum-powered economy. The roadmap, unveiled with the support of the Government of Telangana and developed in collaboration with IBM and an expert council of industry and academic leaders, sets the foundation for a major push to accelerate research, talent development, and the commercialization of quantum technologies.

Quantum Technologies Identified as a Strategic Priority for India

The roadmap emphasizes the importance of quantum technologies in shaping the future of industries ranging from healthcare, finance, and logistics to national security. With its potential to revolutionize various sectors, quantum technology offers India the opportunity to leapfrog ahead and become a global leader in frontier innovation. The document underscores that India can no longer afford to follow global standards but must instead establish itself as a primary player driving innovation in this transformative field.

“Quantum technology is not just an emerging field; it is the backbone of the next technological revolution,” said Debjani Ghosh, Chief Architect of the NITI Aayog Frontier Tech Hub. “It will underpin breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity, and national security. Our roadmap positions India to be at the forefront of these advancements.

Investment and Coordination are Critical for Quantum Leadership

One of the key calls in the roadmap is for urgent investment in critical areas, such as infrastructure, talent development, and industry partnerships. The document identifies the strengths India already possesses, such as a strong academic base and a growing tech ecosystem, but also highlights significant gaps that need to be addressed if India is to become a global supplier of quantum technologies.

Senior NITI Aayog officials stated that the next five years will be pivotal in determining whether India can build a self-sustaining quantum ecosystem or continue to rely on imports. The roadmap stresses that the country must scale up its quantum research and development efforts, while also focusing on building secure and resilient value chains that will establish India as a trusted partner in the global quantum ecosystem.

“We must strengthen our research infrastructure and develop the right talent at scale,” added Ghosh. “This requires collaboration across academia, industry, and government to ensure that we have the right framework in place to support the growth of quantum technologies in India.”

A Collaborative Effort to Build India’s Quantum Future

The roadmap is the result of an extensive collaborative effort between NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub, IBM, and a panel of leading industry and academic experts. This alliance aims to create a comprehensive strategy for India to harness the full potential of quantum technology.

The collaboration with IBM is particularly significant, as the company has been at the forefront of global quantum computing research and development. By leveraging IBM’s expertise and resources, India aims to fast-track the commercialization of quantum technologies and ensure that they are integrated into India’s national and industrial infrastructure.

Opportunities for MSMEs and Startups

The quantum roadmap is expected to open new avenues for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. As the quantum field evolves, MSMEs will be able to tap into new sectors such as quantum-secure communications, precision manufacturing, advanced materials, and the production of specialized components. Start-ups and small tech companies stand to benefit from early participation in the emerging quantum value chains, which will offer them access to cutting-edge technologies and global markets.

The National Quantum Mission: A Foundation for the Future

The quantum roadmap builds upon the foundation laid by India’s National Quantum Mission, which was launched to support the development of quantum technologies in the country. The mission aims to establish India as a key player in the global quantum race by strengthening its research infrastructure, fostering industry partnerships, and nurturing talent across universities and research institutions.

The national roadmap envisions a robust quantum ecosystem, one that will enable India to make significant strides in quantum computing, cryptography, sensing, and communication. These advancements are expected to lead to breakthroughs in several critical areas, including artificial intelligence, healthcare, defense, and secure digital infrastructure.

Government’s Commitment to Quantum Excellence

During the launch event, key political leaders, including Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, and Mr. D. Sridhar Babu, Minister for IT, Electronics & Communications, Industries & Commerce, and Legislative Affairs, Telangana, expressed their strong support for India’s quantum ambitions. Mr. B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, also participated in the launch, underscoring the government’s commitment to developing quantum technologies in line with India’s broader strategic goals.

A Pivotal Step Towards Quantum-Powered Future

“This roadmap marks a pivotal moment in India’s pursuit of a quantum-enabled future,” said Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member, NITI Aayog, during his address. “The launch of the National Quantum Mission has set the stage for India to leverage its scientific and technological potential in a way that will redefine the global quantum landscape. We are committed to ensuring that India remains a global leader in this space for generations to come.”

As the quantum revolution continues to unfold, India’s strategic focus on research, innovation, and industry collaboration will play a crucial role in determining its position in the global technological hierarchy. With a clear vision and the necessary investments, the roadmap is set to accelerate India’s journey towards becoming a leading quantum-powered economy.

A Future Driven by Quantum Technologies

With its far-reaching potential, quantum technology is expected to touch every aspect of modern life, from personal security to national defense. As the roadmap sets the stage for India’s quantum future, the country is poised to lead the way in frontier technological advancements, creating a more secure, efficient, and innovative world for generations to come.
