New Delhi: Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a Miniratna company under the Ministry of Coal and a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, is a key contributor to India’s energy sector. Established in 1985 and headquartered in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, NCL operates in the Moher Sub-Basin of the Singrauli Coalfield, often referred to as the “Energy Capital of India.” The company produces around 139 million tonnes of coal annually, supporting nearly 10% of the nation’s electricity generation.

Advanced Mining Operations

NCL runs ten highly mechanized opencast mines employing state-of-the-art HEMM (Heavy Earth Moving Machinery), draglines, surface miners, and high-capacity equipment. The company has achieved 100% departmental coal production, reflecting its leadership in mechanized and efficient mining operations.

To ensure smooth coal transport, NCL has developed robust First Mile Connectivity (FMC) systems, including belt pipe conveyors, rapid loading systems, and rail-based Merry-Go-Round networks. About 85% of coal is evacuated through eco-friendly modes, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable operations. NCL plans to expand FMC capacity to 129.5 million tonnes per year by 2026.

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental protection is central to NCL’s operations. The company has –

  • Reclaimed mined land extensively
  • Planted over 27 million trees
  • Developed eco-parks
  • Adopted modern dust suppression and air-and-water monitoring systems
  • Commissioned a 50 MW solar power plant at Nigahi

These initiatives reflect NCL’s dedication to green energy and sustainable mining practices.

Employee Welfare and Community Development

NCL supports over 13,000 employees and 33,000 contract workers, providing –

  • Modern housing and water supply systems
  • Healthcare facilities, including the 150-bed Nehru Shatabdi Hospital
  • Schools, shopping complexes, and recreational amenities

The company also emphasizes skill development through the Central Excavation Training Institute, using simulators for safe and efficient training.

Financial Contributions and Safety Standards

Financially, NCL is a major contributor to national revenue, paying over ₹15,400 crore in taxes, duties, and royalties in FY 2024–25, making Singrauli one of the highest revenue-generating districts in Madhya Pradesh.

Safety is a top priority, with certifications under ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 for quality, environment, and occupational safety management.

CSR Impact: Transforming Communities

NCL’s CSR programs have transformed over 200 villages, impacting more than a million people. Key initiatives include –

  • Roads, schools, healthcare, and drinking water facilities
  • Electrification of over 10,000 tribal households
  • Institute of Mining Technology
