New Delhi: In a major move to support the commercialisation of emerging technologies, the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) has launched the National Establishment for Technology Readiness Assessment (NETRA). This landmark initiative is designed to evaluate and certify Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) – a globally recognised standard that measures the maturity of technologies from early research to deployment.
NETRA is poised to play a pivotal role in streamlining India’s innovation pipeline by facilitating informed R&D decisions, optimising funding strategies, and boosting the confidence of investors, industries, and regulatory bodies.
Developed in collaboration with the CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR), which serves as its knowledge partner, NETRA will conduct structured assessments and issue official TRL certifications. These certifications are expected to enhance the credibility and market potential of new technologies across sectors ranging from healthcare and pharmaceuticals to engineering and digital infrastructure.
“Technology development at the right pace is essential to drive innovation and deliver impactful solutions to society. By accurately assessing the maturity of technologies, we can enable smoother transitions from concept to commercialisation,” said an NRDC spokesperson at the launch.
In addition to TRL evaluations, NETRA offers a full suite of innovation support services, including:
- Technology and Intellectual Property (IP) Valuation
- Technology Risk Assessment Reports (TRA)
- Technology Maturation Plans (TMP)
These services are aimed at empowering innovators, start-ups, research institutions, and policymakers with the tools necessary for strategic planning, investment decisions, and technology transfers.
The TRL framework, originally developed by NASA, uses a nine-point scale that ranges from the observation of basic principles (TRL 1) to system deployment in operational settings (TRL 9). It has since become a global benchmark for tracking the development progress of technologies.
By institutionalising TRL assessments through NETRA, NRDC aims to make India’s innovation journey more efficient, transparent, and globally competitive, aligning with the country’s ambition to emerge as a global hub for high-impact, market-ready technologies.
