Noida: NTPC Limited, in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways, organized the National Conference on Fly Ash Utilization and Transportation on 25 August 2025 at the Power Management Institute, Noida. The event brought together fly ash generators, users, transporters, and policymakers to chart strategies for sustainable fly ash management in India.
Focus on Sustainable Utilization
India generated 340.11 million tonnes of fly ash in FY25, of which 332.63 million tonnes were utilized. The conference highlighted sustainable practices in handling this by-product, aiming to improve utilization rates and reduce environmental impact.
Indian Railways is offering green and cost-effective transportation solutions for fly ash, supported by freight concessions. With expansion potential, Railways is set to play a bigger role in this national sustainability mission.
Sector-Wise Utilization Trends
During FY25, 32% of fly ash was used in road and flyover construction. The cement industry consumed 27%, while 14% went into brick and tile manufacturing. Backfilling and mine filling accounted for 11% and 10%, respectively. Agriculture and ready-mix concrete applications stood between 1% and 2%.
These figures underscore the growing importance of fly ash in infrastructure and industrial development, while reducing dependency on traditional raw materials.
