Prayagraj: Allahabad High Court medical insurance scheme for UP lawyers has become a major focus after the Court took a strong step to protect advocates’ welfare. In a significant move, the Court has registered a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to explore a comprehensive health insurance policy for lawyers across Uttar Pradesh. 

This action comes after noticing repeated cases where lawyers struggled financially during serious medical emergencies. The decision highlights the urgent need for a structured safety net for legal professionals in the state.

The Allahabad High Court observed that many practicing lawyers face serious financial difficulties during medical crises.

Several incidents showed that advocates were unable to afford treatment for life-threatening conditions.

  • Lawyers often lack stable income security
  • No structured medical insurance system exists

  • Dependence on ad-hoc financial help is common

In some recent cases, advocates suffering from severe health issues could not continue treatment due to lack of funds, which triggered judicial concern.

The matter is being heard by a Division Bench of:

  • Justice Rajan Roy
  • Justice Manjive Shukla

The Court has:

  • Ordered registration of a suo motu PIL
  • Directed authorities to explore a comprehensive insurance scheme
  • Highlighted the need for state-level policy intervention

This indicates that the judiciary is stepping in to address a systemic welfare gap for advocates.

Background of the UP lawyers Medical Insurance Scheme

This is not the first time the issue has been raised. Earlier also:

  • The Court had noted absence of insurance schemes for lawyers
  • It had suggested group insurance models for legal professionals
  • Financial distress cases among lawyers have repeatedly come up

In one earlier instance, even a State Law Officer’s family struggled to pay hospital bills, showing the seriousness of the issue.

What The UP lawyers Medical Insurance Scheme May Include

Though details are yet to be finalized, the comprehensive medical insurance scheme may cover:

  • Cashless hospitalization
  • Coverage for serious illnesses
  • Emergency medical assistance
  • Affordable premium plans
  • State-supported or group insurance structure

The aim is to ensure that no lawyer is denied treatment due to lack of money.
