Indian Masterminds Stories

Mumbai: NTPC Limited and the Government of Maharashtra have signed an addendum to their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs), marking a significant step toward enhancing India’s clean and reliable energy ecosystem.

The agreement reinforces efforts to strengthen energy storage capacity and support the integration of renewable power into the national grid.

Amba and Kumbhe PSP Capacity Significantly Increased

The original MoU, signed on September 3, 2024, proposed the development of two pumped storage projects—Amba and Kumbhe—with a combined capacity of 1,800 MW.

Following detailed technical studies, feasibility assessments, and topographical evaluations, the project parameters have now been revised:

  • Amba PSP: Increased from 800 MW to 1,500 MW
  • Kumbhe PSP: Increased from 1,000 MW to 1,100 MW

The total capacity has been significantly enhanced to improve energy storage efficiency and project viability.

Optimised Planning for Better Resource Utilisation

Officials stated that the revision is based on detailed investigations, including reservoir capacity analysis and geographical suitability.

The updated plan aims to:

  • Optimise natural resource usage
  • Improve long-term project efficiency
  • Enhance grid stability and renewable integration
  • Strengthen overall energy generation potential

Strengthening India’s Clean Energy Transition

The addendum formalises the revised capacities while keeping all other terms of the original MoU unchanged.

The initiative is seen as a major step in advancing India’s clean energy transition, particularly in large-scale energy storage solutions that support renewable sources like solar and wind power.

High-Level Participation at Signing Ceremony

The signing ceremony was attended by:

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
  • Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule
  • Senior officials from the Government of Maharashtra
  • Senior representatives from NTPC
