New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) has set an ambitious target of producing 50 million tonnes of minerals in the financial year 2025–26, according to an official statement released Wednesday. The production drive is a part of the state government’s strategic focus on resource optimization, industrial expansion, and inclusive growth in mineral-rich regions.

The announcement came after a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, during which several key issues related to production enhancement and community development were discussed.

Focus on Bauxite Output and New Mine Operationalisation

One of the focal points of the review was bauxite production, a crucial input for Odisha’s aluminium industry. The current bauxite production target of 3.6 million tonnes is set to be scaled up to 6 million tonnes by FY 2026, the statement noted.

The meeting also addressed matters such as extension of mining leases, securing environmental clearances, and operationalisation of new mining areas to meet the increased production goals.

Community Development and Employment Generation in Mining Areas

Chief Minister Majhi emphasised that the expansion of mining activities must go hand-in-hand with community welfare and sustainable development. He directed the OMC to design a special development plan focusing on:

  • Employment opportunities for locals in mining zones
  • Convergence of state development schemes
  • Promotion of forest-based livelihoods
  • Skilling initiatives for youth and professionals

OMC has been tasked with formulating this comprehensive approach to uplift mining-affected areas.

Pellet Plant Project and Recruitment Push

The CM also reviewed the status of OMC’s upcoming pellet plant, expected to begin operations by May 2026. MECON Ltd has been engaged to prepare a techno-economic feasibility report, and a dedicated project committee has already been established to oversee its implementation.

To enhance operational efficiency, the Chief Minister advised recruitment of skilled professionals across OMC’s functional verticals, ensuring a stronger technical foundation for the corporation’s growing operations.

About OMC
