ONGC’s Tripura Asset Runs Drilling Rigs on CNG, Replaces 70% Diesel in Major Green Milestone

First-of-its-kind initiative cuts carbon emissions and operating costs while boosting India’s energy self-reliance through domestic natural gas use
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has achieved a pioneering technological and environmental milestone as its Tripura Asset successfully operated New Generation drilling rigs using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cascades, enabling the substitution of up to 70% of conventional diesel with domestically produced natural gas. The initiative has been implemented without any compromise on engine performance or operational reliability, marking a first-of-its-kind achievement in India’s upstream oil and gas sector.

Cleaner and Cost-Effective Drilling Operations

By replacing a major portion of diesel consumption, the initiative has resulted in a significant reduction in carbon emissions and lower operating costs. The use of CNG also helps cut down particulate and greenhouse gas emissions, making drilling operations more environmentally sustainable.

The shift to natural gas reduces ONGC’s reliance on imported fossil fuels, directly contributing to the government’s push for energy security and self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Collaboration with Tripura Natural Gas Corporation

The project has been implemented in collaboration with Tripura Natural Gas Corporation Limited (TNGCL), demonstrating how indigenous energy resources can be effectively leveraged to strengthen cleaner and more resilient upstream operations. The successful integration of CNG cascades with New Generation drilling rigs highlights the technical feasibility of gas-based fuel substitution in energy-intensive drilling activities.

Boost to Energy Self-Reliance

ONGC officials said the initiative underscores the potential of natural gas as a transition fuel, helping bridge the gap between conventional hydrocarbons and cleaner energy sources. The project aligns with India’s broader climate commitments while ensuring operational efficiency in core oil and gas exploration activities.

About ONGC

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is India’s largest upstream oil and gas company and a Maharatna public sector undertaking. It plays a pivotal role in India’s energy security through exploration, production, and innovation-driven adoption of cleaner and more efficient technologies across its operations.
