Baltal, Jammu & Kashmir: In a key development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision continues to shape infrastructure growth in Jammu & Kashmir. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the ONGC-supported Disaster Management Centre and Yatri Niwas at Baltal today.
This vital infrastructure will serve pilgrims undertaking the Amarnath Yatra, benefiting over 500,000 yatris annually. It will also provide year-round support to nearby local communities.
State-of-the-Art Multi-Facility Complex for Pilgrims and Security Forces
The Baltal complex spans 6,315 square meters. It includes a Yatri Niwas, VIP guest house, security infrastructure, and disaster-response facilities. Now fully operational, this base camp boosts safety, accommodation, sanitation, and emergency response capabilities for both pilgrims and authorities.
Part of ONGC’s Four-Site CSR Infrastructure Drive
This project is part of ONGC’s broader CSR initiative to support the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board in developing permanent facilities. Two similar complexes are being constructed in Nunwan (8,500 sq m) and Bijbehara (7,640 sq m) in Anantnag district. These are expected to be completed by September 2025.
A fourth facility is scheduled for Sidhra, Jammu, with an expected completion timeline of September 2026.

ONGC’s Healthcare Boost for Yatra and Local Welfare
Back in 2024, ONGC constructed permanent 100-bed hospitals with ICUs at Baltal and Chandanwari, replacing temporary medical camps. These hospitals now function as year-round primary health centres, serving both Amarnath pilgrims and local residents.
Strengthening Pilgrim Safety Amid Heightened Security Concerns
The 2025 Amarnath Yatra began on July 3 and will run for 38 days. It follows two major routes: the 14 km Baltal track and the 46 km Pahalgam route. By early July, over 3.3 lakh pilgrims had registered for the yatra.
Enhanced facilities and emergency services have been ramped up to meet the increasing demand. These efforts also respond to recent security challenges, including the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, where tourists were targeted by religion.
Record Turnout of Pilgrims on July 4 Reflects Success
As of Thursday, approximately 12,300 pilgrims had reached the sacred Amarnath shrine. From the latest batch, 2,789 yatris departed from Baltal base camp, while 3,622 pilgrims headed to Nunwan base camp near Pahalgam.
Multi-Layered Security Deployed to Protect the Pilgrimage
To ensure safety, two heavily guarded convoys carrying 291 vehicles departed from Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas. The government has tightened the security grid, deploying over 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). This includes the Indian Army, BSF, CRPF, SSB, and local police, forming a strong coordinated presence across all yatra routes.
