On March 27, 2025, the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) conducted a selection interview for the position of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), a key state-owned telecommunications company. However, the board concluded that none of the 10 candidates interviewed were found suitable for the role.
As a result, PESB has advised the Department of Telecommunications, the administrative ministry, to explore alternative options for filling the vacant CMD position. The board suggested that the department consider utilizing the Search-cum-Selection-Committee (SCSC) or take other appropriate actions with approval from the competent authority.
The vacancy for the CMD post at BSNL has been a point of concern for some time, with the position remaining unfilled. BSNL, which has been facing intense competition from private sector telecom players, is in need of strong leadership to navigate challenges, improve its services, and revitalize its operations.
The PESB’s decision has raised questions about the selection process and the future course of action for filling this critical role at one of India’s largest public sector enterprises. The Department of Telecommunications is expected to respond to the PESB’s advice and determine the next steps for appointing a new leader for BSNL.
BSNL continues to play a significant role in the Indian telecommunications landscape, and the appointment of a new CMD will be crucial for its future growth and stability.
