Jharsuguda, Odisha: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched BSNL’s indigenous 4G service from Jharsuguda, Odisha, marking a major milestone in India’s telecom sector. Alongside the 4G launch, the Prime Minister also inaugurated 97,500 mobile towers, out of which 92,600 will support 4G services, built using 100% indigenous technology.
The launch coincides with BSNL’s 25th anniversary, symbolizing a fresh beginning for the state-owned telecom provider as it aims to strengthen its digital footprint, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Late but Significant Entry into 4G Arena
While private telecom operators have been offering 4G services for several years and are now moving towards 5G, BSNL is officially entering the 4G market with this launch. Officials said the new infrastructure is cloud-based and future-ready, meaning it can be easily upgraded to 5G when required.
The government has invested approximately ₹37,000 crore in constructing the towers, emphasizing the initiative’s role in promoting Digital India and self-reliant technology development (Atmanirbhar Bharat).
Connectivity for Over 26,700 Villages
According to BSNL officials, the project aims to extend connectivity to over 26,700 villages, including 2,472 villages in Odisha alone. The rollout is designed to boost digital access, citizen participation, and rural communication infrastructure.
Officials estimate that over 2 million (20 lakh) new subscribers will join BSNL’s 4G network through this expansion. The initiative is also expected to pave the way for the company’s eventual transition to 5G services.
PM Modi: “Odisha to Play a Vital Role in India’s Growth Story”
Speaking at the event, PM Modi praised Odisha’s growing significance in India’s development journey. He highlighted recent central approvals for two semiconductor units and a semiconductor park in Odisha, positioning the state as a future tech hub.
“Odisha has long faced many challenges, but this decade will lead it toward prosperity. With advancements like BSNL 4G and semiconductor initiatives, Odisha is stepping into a new era of digital and industrial growth,” the Prime Minister said.
A Push Toward Indigenous Technology in Telecom
The launch of a fully ‘Swadeshi’ (indigenous) 4G network positions BSNL as a strategic asset in India’s quest for technological independence. The network has been developed entirely with Indian technology, reflecting the government’s push to reduce reliance on foreign telecom infrastructure.
BSNL’s entry into 4G is expected to level the playing field, especially in regions where private operators have not prioritized network expansion due to commercial viability concerns.
