Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple housing and office infrastructure projects as part of the redevelopment of seven General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) colonies in Delhi.
The large-scale redevelopment initiative, led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, aims to modernize government housing and improve urban infrastructure in the national capital.
Over 2,700 New Government Flats Inaugurated
During the event, the Prime Minister inaugurated more than 2,700 newly constructed government residential units along with key office infrastructure.
The newly inaugurated projects include:
- GPRA quarters at Sarojini Nagar
- Residential units at Kasturba Nagar
- Three towers of General Pool Office Accommodation at Netaji Nagar
These projects will significantly enhance the availability of modern housing and office spaces for government employees.

Foundation Stone for 6,600 Additional Housing Units
In addition to the inaugurations, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for more than 6,600 new GPRA flats across several redevelopment sites, including:
- Sarojini Nagar
- Netaji Nagar
- Sriniwaspuri
- Kasturba Nagar
The redevelopment of the seven GPRA colonies is expected to create over 21,000 modern government residential units with a built-up area of approximately 65.42 lakh square metres.
Major Colonies Under Redevelopment
The GPRA redevelopment programme includes the transformation of the following colonies:
- Mohammadpur
- Thyagraj Nagar
- Kasturba Nagar
- Sriniwaspuri
- Nauroji Nagar
- Sarojini Nagar
- Netaji Nagar
Three colonies—Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar and Nauroji Nagar—are being redeveloped by NBCC (India) Limited, while the remaining projects are being executed by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

Bharat Business Park to Offer World-Class Office Infrastructure
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for eight towers of Bharat Business Park in Sarojini Nagar.
Developed by NBCC (India) Limited, the commercial complex will feature approximately 2.17 lakh square metres of office space and is expected to cost around ₹2,270 crore.
Key features of the project include:
- Centralised air-conditioning with energy-efficient chillers
- Intelligent Building Management System (BMS)
- Advanced fire safety and CCTV surveillance
- 100% power backup through DG sets and UPS systems
- Solar rooftop panels and EV charging stations
- Rainwater harvesting systems
- Three-level basement parking for over 2,800 vehicles
The building is also designed to comply with GRIHA green building standards.
Redevelopment Based on Innovative Self-Financing Model
The GPRA redevelopment programme follows a self-sustainable financing model, where commercial built-up areas are monetised to fund the redevelopment of government housing.
This innovative model allows the government to redevelop ageing colonies into modern residential complexes without putting additional financial burden on the public exchequer.
Project Generating Large-Scale Employment
The redevelopment programme has also created significant employment opportunities.
So far, the project has generated around 3.55 crore man-days of employment, with NBCC (India) Limited alone contributing over 3 crore man-days through its projects.
Among the colonies, Sarojini Nagar accounts for the largest share of redevelopment work, followed by Netaji Nagar and Kasturba Nagar.
Interaction with Women Workers on International Women’s Day
Marking International Women’s Day 2026, the Prime Minister interacted with women workers engaged in the project and handed over allotment keys to a few women beneficiaries.
Women employees of NBCC also briefed the Prime Minister about the progress of the GPRA redevelopment project during his visit to the Sarojini Nagar site.
One of Delhi’s Largest Urban Redevelopment Projects
The redevelopment of the seven GPRA colonies represents one of the largest urban redevelopment initiatives in the national capital, aimed at improving government housing, strengthening urban infrastructure and generating revenue for the government.
The project is also expected to boost growth in the construction and allied sectors while providing modern residential and commercial spaces in Delhi.
