Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Micron Technology’s state-of-the-art Semiconductor Assembly, Test, and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking a historic milestone in India’s technology and semiconductor journey. The event signifies the official start of commercial production and shipment of the first Made-in-India semiconductor memory modules. Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw will also be present during the inauguration.

Transforming India’s Semiconductor Landscape

The Sanand facility represents a major leap for India’s electronics and semiconductor ecosystem. With an investment exceeding ₹22,500 crore, it is the first project approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, reinforcing the government’s vision of building a self-reliant semiconductor industry.

The project, which broke ground in September 2023, now moves into commercial production, enabling the conversion of advanced DRAM and NAND wafers into finished memory modules ready for global markets. This positions India as a competitive player in the high-tech semiconductor sector.

World-Class Infrastructure

A standout feature of the facility is its nearly 500,000 square feet of raised-floor cleanroom space, placing it among the largest cleanrooms in the world. The facility’s design ensures cutting-edge assembly, testing, and packaging processes for semiconductor memory products, maintaining international quality standards.

By launching commercial shipments of the first indigenous memory modules, India is making a decisive step toward self-reliance in the semiconductor value chain, reducing dependency on imports and strengthening the domestic electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

Economic and Strategic Significance

Experts note that the Micron ATMP facility in Gujarat will generate high-value employment opportunities and create downstream supply chain benefits for the electronics sector. The project is expected to boost India’s global competitiveness in semiconductors, support research and development, and reinforce India’s position in advanced technology manufacturing.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that such initiatives are aligned with India’s “Make in India” and self-reliant technology objectives, ensuring that the country emerges as a global hub for semiconductor innovation and production.

A Milestone for India’s Tech Ecosystem

The inauguration of the Micron facility marks a transformative moment in India’s journey toward technological self-sufficiency. As the first commercial production of Made-in-India memory modules begins, it paves the way for India to play a pivotal role in the global semiconductor supply chain, reinforcing national goals of innovation, investment, and industrial growth.

This event reflects India’s commitment to cutting-edge manufacturing, employment generation, and technological leadership, furthering PM Modi’s vision of a self-reliant and globally competitive India.
