New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), a Maharatna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has emerged as the successful bidder for a high-capacity inter-regional transmission project under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism.
The project aims to strengthen the inter-regional transmission system between Northern and Western regions (NR-WR) and specifically relieve the load on the existing 765 kV Vindhyachal-Varanasi double-circuit line.
Project Award and Scope
Power Grid was awarded the project through a Letter of Intent (LoI) issued on September 16, 2025. The project will be developed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, as per the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Power and regulated by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).
As part of the project, PGCIL will:
- Establish a new 765 kV substation at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
- Construct new 765 kV double-circuit transmission lines across the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
This infrastructure will play a crucial role in boosting inter-regional power transmission capabilities and reducing bottlenecks in the national grid.
Significance of the Project
This project is expected to enhance power flow reliability between the western and northern regions, accommodating rising power demand in key areas. It also aligns with India’s goals to improve grid efficiency, integrate renewable energy, and ensure 24×7 electricity access across states.
The addition of a new Prayagraj substation and associated high-capacity lines will provide operational flexibility and ensure better load management in high-demand zones.
Power Grid’s Growing Transmission Portfolio
With this win, Power Grid further consolidates its leadership in India’s power transmission sector. The company has a proven track record of executing large inter-state and inter-regional projects under both regulated and competitive bidding regimes.
PGCIL continues to be at the forefront of India’s mission to modernize its power infrastructure and strengthen the National Grid, which is crucial for reliable power delivery and renewable integration.
