New Delhi / Gurugram: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the transmission project titled “Inter-Regional Strengthening between SR Grid and ER Grid”, estimated at ₹2,722 crore (NCT estimations). Simultaneously, the company’s Board of Directors has approved a capital investment of ₹1,226.93 crore for refurbishing the 2×500 MW Bhadrawati HVDC Back-to-Back system in Chandrapur.
These initiatives mark significant steps in strengthening India’s power transmission infrastructure and enhancing grid reliability across regions.
Inter-Regional Transmission Project to Strengthen SR-ER Grid Link
The TBCB (Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding) project involves constructing a 765 kV D/C Transmission Line from Angul to Srikakulam, spanning Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. It also includes bay extension works at Angul and Srikakulam sub-stations.
Once completed, the project is expected to enhance power transmission reliability between the Southern and Eastern regions. It will also support future import requirements for the southern region and accommodate growing green hydrogen and ammonia demands.

Bhadrawati HVDC Refurbishment Project
At its board meeting held on December 17, 2025, POWERGRID approved an investment of ₹1,226.93 crore to refurbish the 2×500 MW HVDC Back-to-Back system at Bhadrawati (Chandrapur) under the Additional Capital Expenditure 2024–29 Tariff Block.
The refurbishment will be implemented over a 36-month period from the date of award. The upgrade is expected to improve operational reliability, enhance system efficiency, and strengthen long-term grid stability, supporting seamless inter-regional electricity transfer.
