New Delhi: Public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is making a significant shift from traditional television and radio to digital-first content distribution, leveraging its WAVES OTT platform and the Pay-Per-View (PPV) framework. The move aims to cater to digital audiences, particularly the youth, while expanding Prasar Bharati’s reach across India.
Content Sourcing for Digital Platforms
Under the Content Sourcing Policy 2024, Prasar Bharati is actively sourcing content for Akashvani (All India Radio), DD Channels, and WAVES OTT. The Pay-Per-View framework, launched in 2025, facilitates acquisition of high-quality content tailored specifically for digital and OTT audiences, marking a strategic departure from the traditional TV and radio broadcast model.
This approach not only enhances content variety but also positions Prasar Bharati to compete effectively in the fast-growing digital media space, engaging younger viewers and increasing monetization opportunities.

Transition from Set-Top Boxes to Built-in Satellite Tuners
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) recently mandated that all television sets sold in India must include a built-in satellite tuner. As a result, DD Free Dish set-top boxes (STBs) distribution plans are no longer being pursued, reflecting a modernization of broadcast delivery aligned with technological advancements.
Addressing Workforce Gaps and Land Asset Monetization
Prasar Bharati currently faces vacancy challenges, with 1,994 positions open at Doordarshan and 1,636 at All India Radio Kendras in the North Eastern region.
In parallel, the organization has engaged an expert agency to enhance monetization of its land assets, signaling efforts to improve financial sustainability and optimize resources for strategic development.
Government Oversight and Parliamentary Updates
The developments were confirmed in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan, in response to a question raised by Mr. Sukhendu Sekhar Ray. The official communication highlights Prasar Bharati’s ongoing commitment to innovation, efficiency, and youth-focused content delivery.
