Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has said that the launch of flight operations from Halwara Airport marks the beginning of a new era of economic growth, improved connectivity, and industrial development in the state.
He said the long-delayed project, completed with strong efforts and financial commitment from the Punjab government, will significantly boost trade, investment, and employment opportunities across the region.
₹54.67 Crore Invested in Halwara Airport Development
The Punjab government has invested approximately ₹54.67 crore in the development of Halwara Airport, making it a key infrastructure milestone for the state.
Chief Minister Mann said the airport will provide modern, safe, and affordable air travel facilities while strengthening Punjab’s overall transport infrastructure.
He also visited the airport terminal along with Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal and interacted with local residents during the inauguration phase.
Major Boost for Trade, Industry and Investment
CM Bhagwant Mann stated that regular flight operations from Halwara will open new avenues for:
- Industrial investment
- Business expansion
- Trade connectivity
- Employment generation
He said the airport will make travel easier for entrepreneurs and business leaders, encouraging greater economic activity in Punjab.
Improved Connectivity to Reduce Travel Challenges
Highlighting earlier difficulties, the Chief Minister said the lack of direct flights to key destinations such as Delhi-NCR had created major inconvenience for industrialists and travellers.
With the new airport, travel time, cost, and effort will be significantly reduced, improving overall connectivity and business efficiency.
Push for Naming Airport After Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha
The Chief Minister reiterated the state government’s demand to name Halwara Airport after freedom fighter Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha.
He said the proposal will be strongly raised with the Central Government, calling it a tribute to the revolutionary leader who inspired India’s freedom struggle at a very young age.
Punjab has previously named Chandigarh airport after Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Adampur airport after Guru Ravidas Ji.
Airport to Strengthen Punjab’s Industrial Growth
CM Mann said Halwara Airport will act as a catalyst for industrialisation and position Punjab as a preferred investment destination.
He added that improved air connectivity will attract global investors and enhance the state’s economic competitiveness.
Future Expansion of Flight Connectivity Planned
The Chief Minister announced that more flights will soon be introduced from Halwara Airport to improve passenger convenience.
He also stated that the government is working on enhancing aviation training opportunities and may use facilities like Sahnewal Airport to support pilot training programs for youth.
