Satauj: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has launched a major underground electricity pilot project in his native village Satauj, aiming to enhance rural safety and eliminate risks caused by overhead power lines and short circuits.
The project marks a significant step toward modernizing rural electricity infrastructure in Punjab, with a strong focus on preventing accidents and protecting lives and agricultural assets.
41 km Underground Power Network and Removal of 382 Poles
The pilot project, with an estimated budget of around ₹8 crore, includes large-scale infrastructure upgrades:
- 41 km of underground electrical cables
- Removal of 382 electricity poles
- Underground installation of 11KV high-voltage lines
- Use of modern weather-resistant fiber-based wiring
Officials say the project is designed to reduce hazards caused by hanging wires and outdated electricity systems in rural areas.
Focus on Farmer Safety and Prevention of Crop Fires
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the initiative will not only improve human safety but also help prevent devastating farm fires caused by electrical short circuits.
He emphasized that the underground system will significantly reduce the annual losses suffered by farmers due to fire incidents in standing crops.
Tribute to Lives Lost in Electrical Accidents
While addressing the launch event, the Chief Minister recalled tragic incidents in his village where three young residents lost their lives due to unsafe electricity infrastructure.
He said the project is a tribute to those victims and reflects the government’s commitment to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
Criticism of Previous Governments Over Infrastructure and Corruption
Bhagwant Mann criticized previous administrations, alleging that earlier governments focused on installing electricity poles while ignoring safety and transparency concerns.
He claimed that corruption and inefficiency in earlier systems led to delays and hardships for rural residents seeking basic services.
Punjab Government Highlights Energy Stability and Coal Reserves
The Chief Minister assured that there is no electricity shortage in the state. He said the government has strengthened power generation by acquiring thermal plants and ensuring coal supply.
According to him, Punjab currently maintains a 45-day coal reserve, ensuring stable power availability.
Social Welfare Announcements Reiterated
Reaffirming welfare commitments, Mann mentioned financial assistance schemes for women, promising monthly support under upcoming state initiatives.
He also reiterated the government’s focus on improving living standards through infrastructure upgrades and direct benefit programs.
The underground electricity pilot project in Satauj village represents a major infrastructure shift aimed at improving rural safety, reducing accidents, and modernizing Punjab’s power distribution system. The initiative is expected to serve as a model for similar developments across other rural areas in the state.
