Chandigarh: The suspension of two senior IAS officers by the Punjab government has escalated into a full-blown political controversy, with the state BJP alleging corruption and calling for intervention by the Union government.
Punjab BJP Condemns IAS Officers’ Suspension
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar strongly criticized the AAP-led Punjab government’s decision to suspend IAS officers Kamal Kishor Yadav and Jaspreet Singh on Saturday. Addressing a press conference, Jakhar termed the suspensions as “highly objectionable” and demanded that either the Union Home Minister or the Administrative Tribunal intervene.
“The officers were likely suspended for not giving their consent to corruption in the purchase of smartphones for Anganwadi workers,” Jakhar alleged. “It reeks of corruption. They were suspended for not giving their consent.”
The two officers were reportedly suspended over an alleged delay in procuring smartphones for Anganwadi workers under the Poshan Abhiyan, a central government nutrition initiative.
BJP Leader Invokes Bureaucracy’s Role in Governance
Referring to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and his description of bureaucracy as the “steel frame of the Constitution,” Jakhar emphasized that the IAS officers were acting within their constitutional limits.
“Within the constitutional limit, the Centre should stand to protect them,” he said. “Punjab BJP condemns their suspension in strong words. I request the Home Minister or the Administrative Tribunal to look into the matter. The Punjab Chief Minister and Chief Secretary should be held accountable for this.”
Jakhar’s remarks underline the BJP’s stance that the suspension is politically motivated and undermines administrative integrity.
India-US Trade Agreement Praised by Jakhar
Shifting focus to economic matters, Jakhar lauded the recently concluded India-US trade agreement, calling it a significant boost for both the nation and Punjab. He said the deal would promote industrial growth and create new employment opportunities for Punjab’s youth.
“The Government of India, after careful deliberation, successfully concluded an agreement with the world’s largest economy that will promote industrial growth in the country and in Punjab, without causing any adverse impact on the nation’s farmers, especially those in Punjab,” Jakhar stated.
He further clarified that the agreement does not allow imports of crops like wheat, rice, or maize from the US, ensuring protection for Punjab’s farmers. The dairy sector is also fully safeguarded under the deal, according to the BJP leader.
Jakhar Criticizes Opposition Parties
Jakhar took a swipe at the ruling AAP and the Congress, accusing them of failing to act as a constructive opposition. “The leaders of the AAP and the Congress should rise above partisan politics and congratulate the government for this agreement made in the national interest. However, they failed to play their role,” he said.
He urged critics to base their opposition on facts rather than political motives, adding, “Now that the government issued a clear statement assuring that farmers’ interests will not be compromised, such opposition holds no meaning.”
Political Implications
The suspension of IAS officers coupled with Jakhar’s remarks on the India-US trade agreement highlights a growing political tussle in Punjab, with the BJP positioning itself as the defender of bureaucratic integrity and farmers’ interests, while the AAP government faces criticism for alleged administrative lapses.
