Mr. Raj Kumar Chaudhary has retired from the position of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited upon attaining the age of superannuation, with effect from 30th June 2025 (EOD). He had taken over as CMD in August 2024. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended Mr. Bhupendra Gupta as the next CMD of NHPC.
Distinguished Career in Power Sector
A Civil Engineering graduate from BIT Sindri and holder of an Advanced Diploma in Management, Mr. Chaudhary has over 35 years of experience in the power and hydropower sector. He began his career at NHPC in 1989 as a Probationary Executive (Civil) at the Koel Karo HE Project in Jharkhand.
He rose through the ranks to serve in key technical roles, eventually becoming Director (Technical) before being elevated to the top position. He has also contributed significantly to India’s and Bhutan’s hydropower development, having served as Director (Technical) for the Mangdechhu and Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric projects in Bhutan.
Held Additional Charge of CMD, SJVN
In November 2024, Mr. Chaudhary was also entrusted with the additional charge of CMD, SJVN Limited, further underscoring his leadership in the sector.
Rajendra Prasad Goyal to Lead Temporarily
Following Mr. Chaudhary’s retirement, the Competent Authority has assigned Mr. Rajendra Prasad Goyal, currently Director (Finance), NHPC, the additional charge of CMD, NHPC for a period of two months, effective from 1st July 2025 or until a full-time appointment is made, whichever is earlier.
