Kuttikkanam: Emphasising the growing responsibility of businesses in an era of climate change and social accountability, noted anti-corruption crusader and senior IAS officer Dr Raju Narayana Swamy said that business transformation towards sustainability is no longer a choice but a responsibility. He was addressing the International Conference on Business Transformation Towards Sustainability (ICBTS 2026) held at the Marian Institute of Management, Kuttikkanam.
Sustainability Requires Redesigning Business Models
Dr Swamy highlighted that sustainability goes beyond cosmetic changes and demands a fundamental redesign of business models. According to him, sustainable business practices involve reducing environmental impact, responsible use of natural resources, and creating long-term value not only for shareholders but also for society at large.
He stressed that modern enterprises must integrate sustainability into their core strategies rather than treating it as a peripheral or optional activity.
Warning Against the Growing Threat of Greenwashing
While acknowledging the positive shift towards sustainability, Dr Swamy cautioned against the rising challenge of greenwashing. He explained that greenwashing occurs when companies project an environmentally responsible image without making real, measurable, and verifiable changes in their operations.
He warned that although greenwashing may offer short-term reputational gains, it ultimately erodes public trust and slows genuine progress towards sustainability. Such practices, he noted, undermine the credibility of responsible businesses and dilute the impact of authentic sustainability initiatives.
Call for Ethical and Transparent Corporate Practices
Dr Swamy underlined the need for ethical leadership, transparency, and accountability in corporate sustainability efforts. He asserted that genuine sustainability must be backed by data, measurable outcomes, and long-term commitment, rather than superficial branding exercises.
According to him, businesses must align profitability with social responsibility, ensuring that economic growth does not come at the cost of environmental degradation or social inequity.
Dignitaries at the Conference
Dr Mallika Sankar, Deputy Director, ICSSR, attended the conference as the Guest of Honour. The international conference brought together academicians, industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers to deliberate on strategies, challenges, and innovations in sustainable business transformation.
