Gurugram: State-run power sector lender REC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Indo German Institute of Advanced Technology (IGIAT) to strengthen digital education infrastructure in Assam. Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, REC has committed ₹4.22 crore to establish 100 smart classrooms in government schools across the state.
The project aims to modernise rural education by introducing digital learning tools in underserved and ecologically sensitive regions of Assam.

Project Focus: 100 Government Schools in Assam
The CSR initiative is titled “Establishing 100 Smart Classrooms in 100 Government Schools in the Lakhimpur and Kaziranga regions of Assam.”
It focuses on two key regions:
- Lakhimpur Region: A flood-prone district where seasonal displacement often disrupts education and infrastructure development.
- Kaziranga Region: An ecologically sensitive area where remote geography limits access to modern educational facilities.
Each of the 100 selected government schools will receive one smart classroom, designed to support interactive and digital learning.
Key Objectives of the Smart Classroom Project
The initiative is designed to address educational inequality and improve learning outcomes through technology-driven classrooms. Its primary goals include:
Bridging the Rural Digital Divide
Bringing advanced digital tools, multimedia learning resources, and online curriculum access—similar to urban private schools—into rural government institutions.
Enhancing Student Engagement and Retention
Interactive smart boards and digital content aim to make classroom learning more engaging, helping reduce dropout rates in government schools.
Building Future-Ready Digital Skills
The project will help students develop early digital literacy, preparing them for higher education and a technology-driven job market.
Focus on Sustainable Educational Development
REC Limited’s initiative highlights its broader CSR focus on promoting inclusive and sustainable development, particularly in education. By investing in digital infrastructure, the company aims to strengthen the long-term quality of public schooling in rural India.
