New Delhi: RITES Ltd, a leading railway PSU, has received the ‘Excellence in Sustainable Engineering for the Rail Sector’ award at the 7th Rail Analysis Innovation & Excellence Summit 2026 for its contribution to the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) mega rail project.
The award was presented at the summit held on Friday, January 30, 2026, recognising RITES’ role in delivering sustainable and technically complex railway infrastructure in challenging terrain.
Recognition for Contribution to Strategic Rail Project
RITES was honoured for its engineering and consultancy support to the 272-km USBRL project, a landmark initiative that has connected Kashmir with India’s national railway network. The project was inaugurated in June 2025 and is considered one of the most ambitious railway undertakings in the country.
Key Engineering Feats of the USBRL Project
The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link features several engineering marvels, including the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, and India’s longest railway tunnel, T-50, spanning 12.7 km.
To navigate the rugged Himalayan terrain, the project includes 36 tunnels and over 943 bridges, showcasing advanced engineering, safety, and sustainability practices.
Execution and Project Cost Details
The USBRL project has been executed by IRCON International, Northern Railway, and Konkan Railway Corporation, with Encardio-Rite providing critical monitoring and instrumentation services. The project has been developed at an estimated cost of around ₹37,000 crore.
Once fully operational, the rail link offers an all-weather, high-speed connection for passengers and improved logistics support, boosting regional connectivity and economic development.
