New Delhi: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has received a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from Northern Railway for the design and construction of a major rail-cum-road bridge over the River Ganga near Kashi Railway Station in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The project, valued at ₹1,201.35 crore (including taxes), marks a significant infrastructure development under the Lucknow Division of Northern Railway.
Project Overview: Key Features of the Rail-Cum-Road Bridge
The contract involves the construction of New Rail Cum Road Bridge No. 11, which will be built approximately 50 meters downstream of the existing Old Malviya Bridge near Kashi Railway Station.

- Bridge Structure:
- 8 spans of 108.5 meters
- 2 spans of 103.3 meters
- Open web steel girder design
- 8 spans of 108.5 meters
- Bridge Configuration:
- Four railway tracks on the lower deck
- Six-lane roadway on the upper deck
- Four railway tracks on the lower deck
- Scope of Work:
- Substructure and superstructure construction
- Railway and road approaches as per the approved General Arrangement Drawing (GAD)
- Overhead Equipment (OHE) works
- General electrical works
- Substructure and superstructure construction
The total execution timeline for the project is set at 48 months.

Joint Venture Structure for Project Execution
The project will be executed through a joint venture between Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and GPT Infraprojects Limited. The shareholding in the joint venture is divided as follows:
- Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) – 60%
- GPT Infraprojects Limited – 40%
This project is part of RVNL’s ongoing commitment to large-scale infrastructure development in India and reflects the company’s capacity to manage complex railway and multi-modal projects.

This new rail-cum-road bridge is strategically important for enhancing rail and road connectivity in Varanasi, a significant religious, cultural, and transportation hub in northern India. By adding four railway tracks and a six-lane roadway, the project aims to reduce congestion and improve logistics efficiency in the region.
