In a remarkable display of accountability, the Municipal Commissioner of Saharanpur, Sanjay Singh, ordered a fine to be issued for his own escort vehicle after it violated traffic rules. The Commissioner was inspecting the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), which monitors traffic violations through installed cameras across the city. During the inspection, he noticed that the escort vehicle following his car had also broken traffic rules.
Upon observing the violation, the commissioner immediately instructed the staff, saying, “Issue the challan.” The municipal team was surprised by this directive. The Commissioner emphasised, “It doesn’t matter whose vehicle it is; if traffic rules are broken, a challan will be issued.”
Monthly Target of ₹40 Lakh in Fines Set
Following this incident, Commissioner Sanjay Singh set a target for the municipal team to issue fines worth ₹40 lakh every month using surveillance cameras. This initiative means stricter enforcement of traffic rules in Saharanpur, likely impacting residents who fail to comply. Both the municipal corporation and the police will monitor violations through CCTV cameras installed across the city and issue fines accordingly.
CCTV Cameras on All Major Roads
The city’s major roads and residential areas are equipped with CCTV cameras, monitored by the ICCC. The team issues online challans directly from the control centre to those violating traffic rules. With the new monthly target in place, the municipal team is expected to ramp up enforcement efforts and ensure stricter adherence to traffic regulations.
