Indian Masterminds Stories

Mumbai: Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a significant order for EPC projects and products in the domestic metals sector from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and other customers. The order has been awarded to L&T’s Minerals and Metals (M&M) business vertical, reinforcing its strong presence in India’s steel manufacturing ecosystem.

Decades-Old Partnership Driving Steel Growth

L&T and SAIL share a long-standing relationship spanning several decades, marked by the successful execution of multiple metallurgical projects across India. This enduring collaboration has played a key role in advancing the country’s steel infrastructure through innovation, capacity expansion, and sustainable development.

Major Expansion at IISCO Steel Plant, Burnpur

As part of its expansion and modernisation programme, SAIL is increasing the crude steel capacity of the IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) at Burnpur, West Bengal, from 2.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 6.5 MTPA.

Under this project, L&T’s M&M business has been awarded the complete engineering, procurement and installation (EPI) package for several critical process units. These include the Coke Oven Battery, By-Product Plant, Basic Oxygen Furnace, and a specialised material handling equipment package, which together form the backbone of the new steel complex.

Bokaro Steel Plant Expansion Strengthens L&T’s Role

In parallel, SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) in Jharkhand is undergoing a major upstream expansion. L&T has been awarded a key package for setting up Sinter Plant #2, further strengthening its footprint in large-scale steel plant infrastructure projects.

Additional Orders Across the Metals Value Chain

Beyond SAIL projects, L&T’s M&M vertical has also secured multiple orders for specialised material handling equipment, including Stacker Reclaimers and Wagon Tipplers, from various clients across India. These orders reflect L&T’s capability to deliver advanced, reliable, and technology-intensive solutions across the minerals and metals value chain.

Leadership Comments

Commenting on the order wins, D. K. Sen, Advisor to CMD – Development Projects & Minerals & Metals, L&T, said that the company’s association with SAIL represents a proud chapter in its journey. He noted that the projects highlight L&T’s ability to deliver world-class metallurgical infrastructure with a strong focus on engineering precision, safety, and sustainability, contributing to India’s self-reliance in steel production.

T. Kumaresan, Senior Vice President & Head – Minerals & Metals, L&T, added that the continued trust placed by SAIL validates L&T’s expertise in executing complex, technology-driven projects under challenging timelines. He emphasized that these wins demonstrate L&T’s end-to-end execution capabilities and commitment to timely project delivery.
