New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest public sector steel producer and a Maharatna company under the Ministry of Steel, has reinforced its vital role in the nation’s defense sector by supplying approximately 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for the Indian Navy’s newest frontline frigates, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri. The frigates were officially commissioned into service at Visakhapatnam today, in a ceremony presided over by the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh.
SAIL’s Strategic Role in Naval Modernization
SAIL’s contribution to the construction of these advanced frigates highlights the company’s strategic partnership with key shipbuilders Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE). The critical-grade hot-rolled sheets and plates were sourced from SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela Steel Plants, demonstrating the robust capabilities of India’s steel industry to meet stringent defense requirements.
By supplying this specialized steel, SAIL supports India’s drive towards defense self-reliance through ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. The indigenous production of such steel reduces the country’s reliance on imports of special quality steel needed for defense manufacturing.
Milestone for Indigenous Defense Ecosystem
The commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri is a testament to the strength of India’s indigenous defense ecosystem, showcasing collaboration across the steel production, shipbuilding, and naval operations sectors. SAIL’s Special Plate Plant at Rourkela alone has supplied over 100,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for various defense applications including tanks, warships, and missiles, underscoring its pivotal role in defense manufacturing.
Legacy of Supporting India’s Naval Fleet
SAIL’s partnership with the Indian Navy is long-standing and distinguished. Over the years, it has supplied critical-grade steel for many iconic naval vessels such as INS Vikrant, INS Nilgiri, INS Ajay, INS Nistar, INS Arnala, INS Vindhyagiri, and INS Surat. This consistent contribution has established SAIL as a trusted national manufacturer and a key collaborator in India’s naval modernization journey.
Fostering Indigenous Production
With the commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, SAIL once again demonstrates its commitment to strengthening India’s defense capabilities and fostering indigenous production. This collaboration marks another significant milestone in the country’s march towards self-reliance and enhanced national security.
