New Delhi: In a significant development, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the confirmation of two additional judges of the Gauhati High Court as permanent judges. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Collegium held on August 19.

The judges recommended for permanent appointment are:

  • Justice Budi Habung
  • Justice N Unni Krishnan Nair

The Collegium’s decision comes after careful consideration of the performance and judicial work of the two judges during their tenure as additional judges.

Justice Kaushik Goswami Gets One-Year Extension as Additional Judge

Alongside the recommendation for permanent appointments, the Collegium has also proposed that Justice Kaushik Goswami be appointed as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court for a fresh term of one year. His new term will be effective from November 10, 2025.

The extension indicates the Collegium’s continued confidence in Justice Goswami’s capabilities while keeping his position temporary for the time being.

What Are Additional and Permanent Judges?

In the Indian judicial system, additional judges are appointed temporarily to handle increased workload or vacancies. Their performance is reviewed before they are confirmed as permanent judges, a status that provides more stability and continuity in judicial functioning.

The Gauhati High Court, one of the prominent high courts in Northeast India, serves multiple states including Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.
