New Delhi: The Supreme Court on August 13 issued a strong caution against bulldozing forests in the name of development in the Kancha Gachibowli matter, directing that any destroyed forests must be restored. The Court gave the state six weeks to submit a detailed, sustainable development plan that addresses environmental concerns comprehensively.
Bench Emphasises Environmental Protection
A bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran underscored that progress cannot come at the cost of nature. “The environment must be protected and any destroyed forests must be restored,” the CJI stated.
The Court clarified that its stand was not anti-development but firmly in favour of sustainable growth backed by proper safeguards. It recorded the state’s statement that a “holistic proposal” is being prepared to balance environmental and wildlife concerns with development needs.
State Assures Halt on Work
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi informed the bench that all work in the Kancha Gachibowli area had been stopped. He further explained that the upcoming proposal would not only focus on forests but also cover lakes and other ecological elements.
“If it was satisfactory, the Court would withdraw all orders and commend them,” the CJI remarked, directing the state to ensure the proposal is strong and effective. Singhvi requested six to eight weeks to finalise the detailed plan, but the Court granted six weeks.
Next Steps in the Case
The Supreme Court welcomed the state’s initiative, reiterating that it was not against development, provided it was sustainable and included adequate environmental safeguards. The matter has been listed for hearing after six weeks, when the state is expected to present its comprehensive plan for protecting forests, lakes, and wildlife while allowing carefully regulated development.
