New Delhi: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has set a remarkable new benchmark by achieving an all-time highest Over Burden Removal (OBR) of 25.17 Million Cubic Meters (MCuM) in August 2025. This achievement marks the highest-ever OBR recorded for any August month since SECL’s inception, surpassing the set target of 21.17 MCuM by an impressive 15.8%.
Compared to August 2024, when SECL recorded 13.62 MCuM of OBR, this year’s figure represents a stunning growth of 84.82%, reflecting SECL’s strengthened operational efficiency and commitment towards meeting its production goals.
Understanding Over Burden Removal (OBR) and Its Significance
In the coal mining sector, the removal of layers of soil, rocks, and other materials that lie above coal seams is termed as Over Burden Removal (OBR). This process is critical as it prepares the coal seams for extraction in a timely and efficient manner. OBR is a key performance metric for opencast mining operations, directly influencing coal production capacity.
SECL’s consistent focus on enhancing its OBR capabilities has been pivotal in its operational success. The company has adopted advanced technologies like blast-free ripper technology in its mega projects to facilitate safe, environment-friendly, and efficient removal of overburden.
Progress Towards Annual Targets and Sustainable Practices
For the financial year 2025-26, SECL has been assigned a challenging target of 360 Million Cubic Meters for OBR, and the company is steadily progressing towards achieving this milestone. Alongside operational targets, SECL is also promoting sustainable mining practices and safety through the adoption of innovative technologies.
Additionally, SECL recently launched the HPV vaccination campaign under ‘Mission Sanjeevani’ aimed at promoting women’s health, highlighting the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility.
