Shimla / New Delhi: In a major move toward bolstering India’s clean energy goals, SJVN Limited, a public sector hydropower company, has signed a series of Power Sale Agreements (PSAs) and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with key power utilities including Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). The agreements cover a total capacity of 1,492 MW of hydropower generation from three major upcoming projects: Arun-III, Luhri Stage-I, and Sunni Dam Hydro Electric Projects.
Power Deal with UPPCL for 1,492 MW
At the core of the development is a Power Sale Agreement (PSA) between SJVN and UPPCL for 900 MW of electricity from the Arun-III Hydro Electric Project located in Nepal. Simultaneously, a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was executed for an additional 592 MW from the 210 MW Luhri Stage-I and 382 MW Sunni Dam Hydro Projects—both situated in Himachal Pradesh.
The signing ceremony was held at SJVN’s Liaison Office in New Delhi, in the presence of key dignitaries including Bhupender Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director (Addl. Charge) and Sushil Sharma, Director (Projects).

Speaking on the occasion, Bhupender Gupta emphasized the significance of these agreements in strengthening India’s renewable power infrastructure.
“These agreements mark a significant step towards realizing SJVN’s commitment to clean energy transition and strengthening the power infrastructure for urban consumers,” he stated.
The PSA was signed by R.K. Gupta, Chief General Manager (Power Trading), SJVN and Deepak Raizada, Director (Corporate Planning), UPPCL.
The PPA was signed by Sh. Ashok Kumar, General Manager (C&SO), SJVN and Deepak Raizada, representing UPPCL.
Project Details and Timeline
- Arun-III Hydro Electric Project – 900 MW
- Location: Sankhuwasabha District, Nepal
- Developer: SJVN Arun-3 Power Development Company Pvt. Ltd. (SAPDC), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN
Expected Commissioning: FY 2027–28
Significance: Will supply clean, cross-border hydropower to India, strengthening energy security and regional cooperation.
- Luhri Stage-I HEP – 210 MW
- Sunni Dam HEP – 382 MW
- Location: River Satluj, Himachal Pradesh
- Total Capacity: 592 MW
- Annual Generation: 2,140 million units (MU)
- Expected Commissioning: By December 2028
Objective: Contribute to India’s national grid with green, sustainable energy.
PPA with NDMC for Clean Energy Supply
In addition to the UPPCL agreements, SJVN also signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) for power supply from the 382 MW Sunni Dam Hydro Electric Project.
The signing took place at NDMC Headquarters, New Delhi. The agreement was executed by Ashok Kumar, General Manager (C&SO), SJVN and Brajesh Kumar Yadav, Superintending Engineer (Electrical), NDMC.
This agreement strengthens the NDMC’s efforts toward adopting sustainable and renewable energy sources for powering India’s capital city infrastructure.

A Big Leap Toward India’s Renewable Energy Goals
These agreements reflect SJVN’s strategic approach to accelerating India’s transition to clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy, while also strengthening its footprint across interstate and cross-border energy partnerships.
Once commissioned, these projects will add over 1,490 MW of hydropower to the national energy mix and contribute significantly to India’s 2070 net-zero emissions target.
