BENGALURU / LONDON — Indian small arms manufacturer SSS Defence has officially announced its intent to participate in the UK Ministry of Defence’s Project Grayburn, a high-profile global competition aimed at replacing the British Army’s long-serving SA80 series assault rifles. This decision marks a historic first for an Indian small arms maker at such a significant foreign defence procurement.
Project Grayburn is the UK MoD’s flagship initiative to modernise its infantry weapons by developing or acquiring a next-generation assault rifle platform. The SA80 rifle — in use since the 1980s — has been due for replacement due to evolving battlefield requirements and modern combat expectations.
What is Project Grayburn?
Project Grayburn is a concept-phase programme launched by the UK Ministry of Defence to find a modern successor to the SA80 rifle family. It aims to procure approximately 150,000–180,000 rifles including multiple variants such as dismounted close combat rifles, personal defence weapons, generalist rifles, and cadet rifles. The system will be required to integrate day optics, support night vision devices, and deliver enhanced lethality and reliability across diverse environments.

Importantly, the MoD intends that the winning rifles be manufactured in the UK to strengthen sovereign supply chains, support skilled local employment, and enable long-term partnership frameworks with successful suppliers.
Who Will Compete?
Project Grayburn is attracting interest from major global defence manufacturers. Established heavyweights such as Beretta Defense Technologies, SIG Sauer, Heckler & Koch, FN Herstal and others have already signalled potential bids with their modern assault rifle platforms.
SSS Defence’s entry represents a significant development — especially as it is reportedly the first Indian company publicly declaring its participation in a programme of this scale. The Bengaluru-based firm says its rifles are designed for modularity, ergonomic handling, and compatibility with accessories like optics, suppressors and grenade launchers.
What Sets SSS Defence Apart for Project Grayburn
According to company statements, SSS Defence’s weapons are built using cutting-edge lightweight materials and manufactured under strict quality standards including ISO 9001 and NATO STANAG compliance. These features — combined with battlefield-proven performance across varied terrains — are being positioned as key strengths in meeting Project Grayburn’s requirements.
The move also underscores India’s progress in defence exports and aligns with strategic objectives to elevate indigenous defence technology onto the global stage.
Timeline & Next Steps
Project Grayburn remains in the early concept and industry engagement phase, with formal tender processes expected to follow as the UK government refines its requirements. A contract award could follow in the coming years as the MoD transitions from concept to full acquisition planning.
