New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹586 crore contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited to procure indigenously developed Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 tanks.
The contract was signed in New Delhi on September 21, 2026, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
Indigenous APUs to Strengthen Tank Operations
The Auxiliary Power Unit will serve as an alternate source of electric power for several critical systems installed on the tanks.
These include the fire control system, firing circuit and gun stabilisation system, along with other auxiliary equipment.
The induction of indigenous APUs is expected to strengthen the operational readiness, reliability and sustainability of the Indian Army’s mechanised formations.
For armoured platforms, reliable power supply is essential for the functioning of key systems. The new APUs will therefore support the operational capabilities of the T-72 and T-90 tank fleets.

₹586 Crore Contract Supports Defence Indigenisation
The procurement marks another step towards reducing dependence on imported critical sub-systems for armoured platforms.
The Ministry of Defence said the contract demonstrates the growing role of domestic industry in developing and supplying defence technologies for the armed forces.
The project has been taken forward under the Make-II category, which focuses on industry-led research and development and encourages indigenous development of defence equipment.
The contract with Accurate Industrial Controls Private Limited will translate the indigenously developed APU technology into production and induction into the armed forces.
Focus on Operational Readiness and Reliability
The new APUs are intended to provide an alternate power source for important tank systems, helping improve the reliability and sustainability of the platforms.
For the Army’s mechanised formations, which depend heavily on armoured platforms, maintaining the availability and effectiveness of such systems is an important part of operational preparedness.
The induction of the indigenous APUs will therefore add to efforts to strengthen the support systems associated with T-72 and T-90 tanks.
Make-II Model Connects Innovation With Production
The Ministry has highlighted the contract as an example of how the Make-II mechanism can connect domestic research and development with actual defence production.
Under this approach, Indian industry plays a central role in developing solutions for the armed forces. The APU procurement reflects this industry-led model by moving an indigenous innovation towards production and induction.
This also provides an avenue for Indian defence companies to contribute to the development of critical sub-systems used by the armed forces.
A Step Towards Aatmanirbharta in Defence
The ₹586 crore contract is aligned with the government’s broader focus on Aatmanirbharta in Defence and the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
The Ministry of Defence said the procurement represents a milestone in building a resilient, self-reliant and globally competitive Indian defence industry.
By developing and producing critical components domestically, such procurements can strengthen India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem while supporting the armed forces with locally developed technologies.
The T-72 and T-90 APU contract thus combines two objectives—strengthening the operational support of existing armoured platforms and expanding indigenous capabilities in defence production.
