New Delhi: Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited (TARIL) has secured a significant order for the supply of generator transformers for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL)’s Kaiga Units 5 & 6 nuclear power project in Karnataka.

The order has been received from Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) and marks TARIL’s first order in the nuclear power sector.

The development represents a strategic expansion of TARIL’s presence in the critical power infrastructure segment and strengthens its portfolio of high-value projects.

TARIL Enters Nuclear Power Sector with Kaiga Order

The order marks TARIL’s formal entry into the nuclear power sector, opening a new segment for the transformer and reactor manufacturer.

The company is strengthening its manufacturing capabilities, technology and backward integration to meet the evolving requirements of India’s power infrastructure sector.

The Kaiga project provides TARIL with an opportunity to deploy its transformer manufacturing and engineering capabilities in a highly critical power application.

Kaiga Units 5 & 6 to Add 1,400 MW Nuclear Capacity

Kaiga Units 5 & 6 comprise two indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) being developed by NPCIL at Kaiga in Karnataka.

Together, the two units will add 1,400 MW of nuclear power generation capacity at the Kaiga site.

Key project details include:

  • Project: Kaiga Units 5 & 6
  • Location: Kaiga, Karnataka
  • Developer: NPCIL
  • Reactor type: Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR)
  • Capacity per unit: 700 MWe
  • Total capacity: 1,400 MW
  • TARIL supply: Generator transformers
  • Order received from: Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL)

Generator Transformers to Support Power Evacuation

The generator transformers supplied by TARIL will form an important part of the project’s electrical infrastructure.

These transformers will support the evacuation of electricity generated by the nuclear power units and its integration with the wider transmission network.

The order therefore places TARIL in a strategically important position within the electrical infrastructure requirements of the nuclear power project.

Project Supports India’s Indigenous Nuclear Power Programme

Kaiga Units 5 & 6 are part of India’s indigenous 700 MWe PHWR programme, which is aimed at expanding the country’s nuclear power generation capacity while strengthening domestic technology and manufacturing capabilities.

The addition of 1,400 MW at the Kaiga site will contribute to India’s efforts to expand nuclear power capacity and develop a more resilient and diversified energy ecosystem.

The project also highlights the growing role of domestic manufacturers in supplying critical equipment for major national infrastructure projects.

TARIL MD and CEO Highlights Strategic Importance of Order

Satyen Mamtora, Managing Director & CEO, Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited, said the company was proud to mark its entry into the nuclear power sector through the order.

He highlighted the importance of nuclear energy in supporting India’s long-term energy security and clean-energy ambitions and said TARIL was pleased to contribute its transformer manufacturing capabilities to critical national infrastructure.

Mamtora also said the order validates the confidence placed in TARIL’s technology, engineering capabilities and ability to deliver equipment for highly critical power applications.

He further emphasised the importance of strengthening indigenous capabilities and building a resilient and self-reliant energy ecosystem as India advances towards its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

Order Strengthens TARIL’s Critical Infrastructure Portfolio

The nuclear sector order further strengthens TARIL’s positioning in the critical and high-value power infrastructure segment.

With India continuing to invest in expanding its power generation and transmission capacity, the company is focusing on enhancing its:

  • Manufacturing capabilities
  • Technology base
  • Engineering expertise
  • Backward integration
  • Ability to serve critical power applications

The Kaiga order provides TARIL with an opportunity to build on its capabilities and establish a stronger presence in the nuclear power equipment supply chain.
