Commuters travelling on national highways and expressways will now have to pay higher toll charges, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented an average 4-5% increase in toll fees across various highway sections.

The revised toll rates came into effect from April 1, 2025, as part of NHAI’s annual revision linked to wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation. A senior official from the highways ministry confirmed that the toll hike applies to key expressways and highways, including the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and Delhi-Jaipur Highway.
Currently, India has 855 toll plazas on its national highway network, with around 675 public-funded toll plazas and 180 operated by concessionaires. Each year, toll fees are adjusted as per the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
The toll hike is expected to impact millions of daily commuters and transporters, increasing travel costs across major routes in the country.
