In a significant move to enhance the welfare of sanitation workers, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an extension for the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) for an additional three years, beyond its current term set to end on 31st March 2025. The new tenure will now run until 31st March 2028.
This extension, with a total financial implication of approximately Rs. 50.91 crore, is aimed at ensuring the continued socio-economic upliftment of sanitation workers, improving working conditions in the sanitation sector, and striving to achieve zero fatalities during hazardous cleaning operations.
The NCSK plays a crucial role in addressing the grievances of sanitation workers, both individually and collectively. In addition to investigating specific complaints, the Commission actively monitors the implementation of welfare programs and schemes that support the social and economic rehabilitation of Safai Karmacharis and manual scavengers.
The Cabinet’s decision underscores the government’s commitment to the well-being and safety of sanitation workers, a critical segment of the workforce often exposed to hazardous working conditions.
