Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is set for another major infrastructure expansion with the approval of a nearly 700-kilometre-long Super Expressway that will connect Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh with Shamli in the western part of the state.
The ambitious expressway project is expected to become one of the longest east-west road corridors in the state and is being seen as a major connectivity intervention aimed at reducing travel time, improving freight movement, expanding regional access and strengthening rural economic activity.
Officials say the project is being developed under the supervision of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), while preliminary groundwork including surveys and land acquisition has already begun in several districts.
700-km Corridor to Pass Through 22 Districts
The proposed Super Expressway will stretch across approximately 700 kilometres and connect eastern and western Uttar Pradesh through 22 districts.
The corridor is designed to improve long-distance movement across the state by creating a direct high-speed route between two major ends of Uttar Pradesh.
The alignment is expected to significantly reduce dependence on existing congested highway stretches.
Major East-West Connectivity Project for Uttar Pradesh
The expressway is strategically important because it will connect large parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh directly with western industrial and agricultural belts.
This east-west road link is expected to improve:
- passenger movement
- logistics efficiency
- industrial supply chains
- agricultural transport
The project also aligns with the state’s broader expressway-led development model.
Land Acquisition Begins in Multiple Districts
Preparatory work has entered the land acquisition stage in several districts.
68 Villages Affected in Bareilly Region
Bareilly is among the key districts where acquisition activity is underway.
Officials say nearly 68 villages will be affected in the district.
These villages fall mainly under:
- Nawabganj tehsil
- Baheri tehsil
Initial surveys have already been completed, which is expected to accelerate compensation and acquisition procedures.
Survey Work Completed in Initial Stretches
Field officers have completed early-stage alignment surveys in several identified stretches.
This survey work is crucial for determining exact land requirements, route adjustments and compensation calculations.
Farmers to Receive Compensation
The project is expected to directly affect rural landowners across multiple districts.
Officials have stated that farmers whose land is acquired will receive compensation under applicable land acquisition norms.
The compensation component is being seen as an important rural economic benefit attached to the project.
Potential Rural Economic Impact
Beyond compensation, the expressway is expected to improve rural economic conditions by increasing access to markets and creating secondary development opportunities along the corridor.
Employment Opportunities Expected During Construction
Large infrastructure projects of this scale generally generate direct and indirect employment.
Construction activity is expected to create jobs in:
- transport
- material supply
- labour services
- roadside development
Travel Time Across Uttar Pradesh to Reduce Sharply
Once operational, the Gorakhpur-Shamli corridor is expected to make long-distance travel faster and smoother.
The expressway will likely reduce travel time across major east-west stretches that currently require multiple highway transitions.
Boost to State Logistics and Freight Movement
The new corridor is also expected to support freight mobility by creating a faster route for goods movement across districts.
This could particularly benefit agricultural produce transport and industrial distribution.
UP Strengthens Position as India’s Expressway Leader
Uttar Pradesh already has one of the most extensive expressway networks in India.
The new Super Expressway is expected to further strengthen the state’s infrastructure profile.
Major corridors already operating or under expansion have made expressway-led development a key governance priority.
Project Seen as Long-Term Growth Driver
Officials believe the corridor will influence not just transport but also long-term economic geography by attracting roadside investment and improving district-level accessibility.
A Major Infrastructure Push Under Ongoing Development Agenda
The project adds to a series of large-scale infrastructure initiatives currently underway in Uttar Pradesh aimed at integrating regions, reducing travel barriers and accelerating development.
