Baghpat, UP: A surprise inspection by Baghpat District Magistrate Asmita Lal, a 2015-batch IAS officer, created a stir in Sisana village when she took matters into her own hands. Acting on persistent complaints from villagers about heaps of garbage and years of neglect, the DM picked up a broom herself and initiated a cleanliness drive on the spot.
DM’s Direct Action Forces Immediate Response
Villagers were taken aback as the senior officer began sweeping the streets strewn with garbage, a sight that prompted immediate action from the otherwise lethargic local administration. The District Magistrate’s bold gesture came after locals alleged that no proper cleaning had taken place for over five years and that garbage had been piling up in the lanes.
DPRO Reprimanded, Asked to Lead by Example
During the inspection, District Panchayati Raj Officer (DPRO), who is reportedly physically challenged, received a stern dressing-down from the DM. “I don’t know how you will do it, but now cleaning must happen,” she said firmly. Under visible pressure, the DPRO began cleaning immediately, setting an example for the rest of the staff.
Officers Put on Notice, Laxity Will Invite Action
Other officials accompanying the DM were also pulled up. She warned them that visible work on the ground would now be the only acceptable metric, and any signs of negligence would invite disciplinary action. In one notable moment, she even had a sanitation employee made to sit on a chair to continue working properly and ensured garbage was cleared on the spot.
Public Reaction: Villagers Applaud Bold Step
The unexpected yet powerful action by DM Asmita Lal was welcomed by the villagers. Many said this was the first time in years that the administration had visibly responded to their grievances about sanitation. Several residents expressed hope that the cleanliness drive would be the start of permanent improvements in the village’s infrastructure.
DM’s Message: Cleanliness is Non-Negotiable
DM Lal made it clear that her intervention wasn’t symbolic, but part of a continued commitment to improving rural hygiene and sanitation in Baghpat. Her field visit sends a strong message to administrative officers: action is now the standard, not paperwork.
