New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026, but this year, the spotlight is on the document itself rather than the examination. Aspirants and social media users have reported more than 40 spelling, grammatical, and sentence structure errors in the official notification, raising concerns about the quality control of one of the country’s most prestigious examinations.
Spelling Errors That Shocked Aspirants
Several glaring mistakes in the notification have been highlighted by candidates online:
‘Examination’ becomes ‘Examinaiton’ – The word “Examination” was incorrectly spelled as “Examinaiton” on pages 2, 17, and 156, including the “How to Apply” section.
‘Candidates’ becomes ‘Cadidates’ – “Candidates” was misspelled on pages 2, 18, 24, and 156, while the correct spelling appears nearby, indicating inconsistent proofreading.
‘Benchmark’ becomes ‘Bechmark’ – On page 7, the term related to benchmark disabilities was misspelled as “Bechmark.” The word “Functional” also appeared as “Functinal.”
Abbreviations misspelled – Page 8 lists “List of Abbriviations” instead of “Abbreviations.”
Place names and industry terms – On page 9, Kolkata is spelled as “KOLKATTA” in one instance and correctly elsewhere; “agro-based industries” became “ago-based industries,” “Public Sector Undertaking” appeared as “public sector underkings,” and “associated” was written as “asssociated.”
Miscellaneous errors – The word “BEYOND” was written as “BEYND” on the last page.
Social media users have been quick to point out that if such errors occur in candidate answer sheets, marks can be deducted, making these mistakes in the official UPSC notification particularly embarrassing.
Why This Matters
The UPSC, a constitutional body of the Government of India, is responsible for selecting qualified and honest officers for the country. Officers recruited through the Civil Services Examination go on to become District Collectors, SPs, and diplomats, among other roles, essentially forming the backbone of India’s administrative machinery.
Given this responsibility, critics argue that the presence of such basic spelling and grammatical errors in the official notification raises questions about the attention to detail and professionalism of the commission.
Application Process and Vacancies for 2026
Despite the errors, the application process for CSE 2026 has started and will continue until February 24, 2026, through the official website upsconline.nic.in.
- Civil Services Examination 2026: 933 vacancies
- Indian Forest Service 2026: 80 vacancies
Every year, millions of candidates apply for the exam. In 2025, over 10 lakh aspirants submitted applications. Of these, 4,161 cleared the Prelims, 2,736 reached the interview stage, and 979 were finally selected. In previous years, the number of applicants and selected candidates has remained similarly high.
Social Media Reaction
The notification has become a trending topic online, with users sharing screenshots and pointing out each error. Many have expressed surprise that a commission responsible for conducting one of the world’s toughest exams allowed over 40 errors in an official document.
Experts suggest that such mistakes could have been avoided through proper proofreading and quality checks, especially given the significance of the notification for aspirants who invest months or even years in preparation.
Check Before You Apply
While the Civil Services Examination remains a highly respected gateway to India’s administrative services, the 2026 notification controversy highlights the importance of accuracy and professionalism in official communications. Candidates are advised to verify critical information carefully before applying to avoid confusion due to these typographical and grammatical errors.
