Continuous torrential rain across various parts of Uttar Pradesh has triggered widespread devastation, with Bundelkhand emerging as the worst-hit region. Rivers like the Mandakini in Chitrakoot have surged above the danger mark, while the Yamuna is also in spate, leading to rising water levels in low-lying villages, especially in Jhansi and Lalitpur. Water has started entering residential areas, raising fears of further damage.
Casualties Mount Across Districts
Seventeen people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents reported on Friday alone. In Banda’s Bisanda area, a brother and sister died after their house collapsed. Two brothers drowned in a swollen drain in Tindwari, and a youth died in Girwan after being crushed by a wall. In Chitrakoot, another pair of siblings died in a house collapse. In Repura area, two children drowned in Sujauwa pond.
Tragedy struck Mahoba’s Sijhari village where a mother and her son died after being trapped under debris following a house collapse. In Jaitpur’s Ragolia Buzurg village, a couple cooking in their kitchen were buried under rubble but were rescued and hospitalized. A woman died in Lalitpur, while one man was swept away in Sukhnai river in Jhansi and remains missing. Another youth drowned in Narua pond in Mauranipur while visiting Saprar dam.
Infrastructure Damage and Connectivity Breakdown
In Orai, over a dozen houses have collapsed due to heavy rains, while the overflowing Malanga Nala has worsened the situation. In Etawah’s Saifai, a youth died after being crushed by a tree. Rising water levels in the Yamuna have led to flood-like conditions in Mau’s coastal villages. The Bardha river has overflowed, severing road connectivity in many places. A kutcha road next to an under-construction bridge over the Kaushiki river has been submerged, forcing locals to commute via boats.
