Dehradun: In a significant step toward providing a new identity and stronger support system for para athletes, the Uttarakhand government has initiated efforts to establish a Para Sports University in the state. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the Director of Sports to prepare a detailed action plan for the proposed university following a proposal submitted by renowned para athlete and Padma Shri awardee Deepa Malik.
A Dedicated Platform for Para Athletes
The initiative aims to provide para athletes with better training opportunities, modern sports infrastructure, and a dedicated academic and sporting platform. The proposed university is expected to serve as a center of excellence for para sports, particularly benefiting athletes from Uttarakhand’s hilly regions, where immense talent exists but access to advanced facilities remains limited.
Chief Minister Praises Deepa Malik’s Contribution
During a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residence on Friday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami felicitated Deepa Malik and lauded her remarkable contribution to para sports. He said that her journey of struggle, determination, and success is an inspiration not only for para athletes but also for society at large. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to promoting inclusive sports development.
Vision for National and International Excellence
Sharing her perspective, Deepa Malik stated that Uttarakhand has enormous untapped potential among para athletes. However, the absence of structured training programs, modern facilities, and a dedicated institution has often limited their growth. She emphasized that the establishment of a Para Sports University would ensure systematic training, scientific coaching, and exposure, enabling athletes to perform strongly at national and international competitions.
Prominent Sports Officials Present
The meeting was attended by several prominent figures from the para sports community, including Paralympic Committee of India General Secretary Jaywant Hammunawar, India Para Powerlifting Chairperson JP Singh, Para Powerlifting Vice President Shubham Chaudhary, Core University Chairman JC Jain, Paralympic powerlifter Paramjeet Kumar, and others.
Toward Inclusive Sports Development
The proposed Para Sports University reflects the Uttarakhand government’s broader vision of inclusive development and its determination to create equal opportunities for athletes with disabilities. If implemented, the initiative could position Uttarakhand as a leading hub for para sports excellence in India.
