Mumbai/Kolhapur: In a significant development over the ongoing controversy regarding elephant Mahadevi (popularly known as Madhuri), Vantara has issued an official statement clarifying its limited role in her relocation and affirming full support for her return to Kolhapur.
The statement comes after Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met senior Vantara officials in Mumbai to discuss the issue.
Vantara: “No Role in Initiating Relocation”
In its official press release, Vantara emphasized that it neither initiated nor recommended the relocation of Madhuri and acted solely in compliance with a Supreme Court directive.
“At no stage did Vantara initiate or recommend the relocation, nor was there any intent to interfere with religious practice or sentiment,” the statement read.
Vantara added that it respects the cultural and religious values associated with the Jain Math and Kolhapur community, and fully supports a peaceful and respectful resolution to the matter.
CM Fadnavis: Elephant Will Return to Kolhapur
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis posted on X, confirming Vantara’s support for the Maharashtra Government’s petition before the court, which seeks Mahadevi’s return to Nandani Jain Math.
“They confirmed to me that they only acted in compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s orders and made no attempt to take custody of the elephant,” Fadnavis stated, adding that the government is committed to addressing the issue sensitively and lawfully.
I had an extensive discussion with The Vantara team today in Mumbai. Good news is that they assured me that they are happy to join Maharashtra Government’s petition before the Hon’ble Supreme Court for the smooth passage of the elephant 🐘 ‘Madhuri’ back to the Math.

Proposal for Local Elephant Rehabilitation Centre
In a constructive gesture, Vantara has proposed working collaboratively with the Jain Math and state government to establish a satellite elephant rehabilitation centre near Nandani Math in Kolhapur.
The proposed facility would meet global standards of elephant care and include-
- Hydrotherapy facilities
- Open natural enclosures
- Round-the-clock veterinary care
- Environments replicating natural habitats
This initiative, Vantara says, aims to balance animal welfare with cultural and spiritual values.
Community Sentiments and Judicial Compliance Both Acknowledged
The elephant, revered at the Nandani Math, was relocated following a Supreme Court order, sparking local outcry and protests. Community leaders argued the elephant was not mistreated and held religious significance for the Math.
With both sides now engaging constructively, Fadnavis expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved amicably while respecting the court’s directions and religious sentiments.
