New Delhi: In a key diplomatic move, the Government of India has appointed Sandeep Arya, a 1994-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday.
Arya, who is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is expected to take up his new assignment in Thimphu shortly.
“Sandeep Arya (IFS:1994), presently Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan,” the MEA confirmed in its statement.
A Distinguished Diplomatic Career
Sandeep Arya has had a distinguished diplomatic career spanning over three decades, holding several high-level postings both at home and abroad.
He was appointed as India’s Ambassador to Vietnam in October 2022, playing a pivotal role in strengthening India-Vietnam ties under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework.
From 2019 to 2022, Arya served as Additional Secretary (Disarmament & International Security Affairs) and Joint Secretary (Europe West/AD) at MEA headquarters in New Delhi. He was also High Commissioner to Tanzania and Representative to the East African Community between 2015 and 2019.
Between 1994 and 2015, he served in various capacities at Indian Missions in the Netherlands, Russia, and Ukraine, and held significant roles in different MEA divisions in New Delhi.

Educational Background and Personal Interests
Born in June 1971 in Kashipur, Sandeep Arya holds a wide-ranging academic portfolio, including:

He is fluent in Hindi, English, and Russian, and has personal interests in history, international relations, music, yoga, and global developments.
