The Union government has recently appointed Ms. Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar as the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW). This appointment was made under Section 3 of the National Commission for Women Act, 1990, for a term of three years or until she reaches the age of 65, whichever ends earlier. Ms. Rahatkar succeeds Ms. Rekha Sharma, whose term as NCW chief concluded on August 6th.
Apart from the Chairperson, a new member, Dr. Archana Majumdar has been for a three-year term in the NCW, as stated in a notification from the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Ms. Rahatkar is currently the National Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Co-Incharge of the party’s Rajasthan unit and has held significant positions within the ruling party for several decades.
