New Delhi : VTOL Aviation India has developed the VLM_X VTOL loitering kamikaze drone, an advanced Made-in-India precision strike unmanned aerial system designed to enhance the Indian Armed Forces’ tactical capabilities.
This state-of-the-art Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) loitering munition integrates AI-powered target recognition, autonomous operations, and high-accuracy strike systems to detect and neutralize a wide range of threats without the need for runways—a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence tech ecosystem.
What Is the VLM_X VTOL Loitering Kamikaze Drone?
The VLM_X is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) loitering munition developed by Navi Mumbai-based VTOL Aviation India Pvt. Ltd. designed for kamikaze (suicide) missions in modern combat. Unlike traditional UAVs, this platform combines autonomous flying, target recognition algorithms, and a precision strike payload to loiter in an area before engaging a designated target.

The system is fully indigenous and aligns with India’s IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) initiative. It represents a major step forward in reducing dependency on foreign defence technology.
Key Features of VLM_X VTOL Loitering Kamikaze Drone
The VLM_X integrates advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capable of processing real-time camera feeds. This enables the drone to detect and distinguish between various categories of threats such as vehicles, personnel, tanks, radar installations, drones, aircraft, communication systems, and marine vessels.
This intelligent system helps minimize operator workload and improves precision, especially in complex battlefields.
Launch, Loiter and Strike
Vertical take-off and landing enables the VLM_X to operate from compact and confined areas, including naval decks, forward outposts, and urban environments where traditional runway-based UAVs are impractical.
Once airborne, it can loiter over a designated area, survey targets, and execute precision strikes using either tap-to-target vision or geo-coordinate based commands.
VLM_X VTOL Loitering Kamikaze Drone Range
Some of the notable performance specifications include:
- Operational range: up to 30 km
- Endurance: 20–30 minutes per sortie
- Payload: 2.2–3 kg explosive package
- Cruise speed: ~30 m/s
- Maximum altitude: up to 6,000 m AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level)
- Low acoustic signature: <40 dB at 300 m for stealth operations
Its combination of endurance, range, and stealth enhances battlefield effectiveness while reducing detectability.
What are Advantages of VLM_X VTOL Loitering Kamikaze Drone
VLM_X can take off and land vertically, it eliminates the dependency on prepared airstrips. This makes it suitable for use from remote and rugged terrains, including mountainous regions and coastal zones.
Precision Targeting
The drone’s AI-based target identification coupled with its autonomous or semi-autonomous firing options boosts accuracy, reducing collateral damage. This capability is critical in modern asymmetric warfare and counter-insurgency scenarios.
Multi-Domain Utility
Beyond strike missions, the VLM_X can gather surveillance and reconnaissance data, functioning as an ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) asset before engaging targets or relaying battlefield information.
