In a significant move under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has upgraded the infrastructure at Kalpataru Special School, located in Butibori, Nagpur. The enhancements include the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP), a lift, and a compound wall, completed at a total cost of Rs. 28.17 lakh.

The newly constructed facilities were inaugurated on May 17, 2025, by Mr. G. Sitaraman, General Manager (CSR), WCL. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sitaraman said that the STP will treat 7,000 to 10,000 litres of wastewater daily, which will be reused for gardening purposes. This step is expected to help maintain a clean and green environment on the school campus.

Highlighting the significance of the compound wall, Mr. Sitaraman stated that it ensures the safety and demarcation of the school premises, providing a secure environment for 118 special children, 45 staff members, and daily visitors. The installation of a lift was also appreciated, as it enhances accessibility and mobility for students with special needs, offering them greater independence and dignity.

Mr. Sitaraman emphasised that WCL’s CSR support not only reinforces the school’s physical infrastructure but also contributes meaningfully to the holistic development of differently-abled children by fostering a safe, clean, and respectful atmosphere. The event was attended by local dignitaries, school staff, students, and parents.

Kalpataru Special School is managed by Sandhya Samvardhan Sanstha, an organisation that has been dedicated to the rehabilitation and education of mentally challenged children since 1993. Currently, the school provides education, therapy, and vocational training to over 118 children, including those with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and multiple disabilities. The institution’s core mission is to help these children become self-reliant and secure a dignified place in society.
