New Delhi: Sujata Chaturvedi, the Union Sports Secretary, has been appointed as a Member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) by the President of India under Article 316(1) of the Constitution.
Ms Chaturvedi’s appointment comes just two months before her scheduled retirement on June 30, 2025, marking the culmination of her distinguished career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
Ms Chaturvedi, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, brings extensive administrative experience to the UPSC. Before her current role as Union Sports Secretary, she served as Additional Secretary (Establishment) in the Department of Personnel & Training (DoP&T), where she played a key role in civil services management. Her tenure also includes significant positions in her home cadre of Bihar, where she served as Principal Secretary (Finance). In addition, she contributed to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) as Deputy Director General.
Under Article 316(2) of the Constitution, Chaturvedi’s tenure as a UPSC Member will be six years from the date she assumes office or until she turns 65, whichever comes first. The terms and conditions of her service will be governed by the UPSC (Members) Regulations, 1969, as amended from time to time.
The UPSC, which is responsible for conducting examinations for recruitment to various services and posts under the Government of India, is headed by a Chairperson and can have up to 10 Members.
This appointment comes as a significant development in Chaturvedi’s illustrious career and is expected to further strengthen the UPSC’s role in ensuring the selection of the most capable individuals for key administrative positions in the country.
